Madonna gets “crucified” a mile from Vatican City
By M&C News Aug 7, 2006, 11:33 GMT

Despite protest from the Roman Catholic Church, more than 70,000 fans of the pop diva witnessed Madonna perform a mock crucifixion during her concert on Sunday night at the Olympic Stadium – a mile from Vatican City.
The act came under fire last week when Catholic leaders denounced the act as a cheap publicity stunt, an attack on the Catholic religion and complete blasphemy to the Christian religion. Jewish and Muslim leaders also joined in the protest of the segment.
Madonna sold out the stadium, and treated fans to a two-and-a-half hour concert that was loaded with the type of controversy that you would expect out of the diva.
In addition to the mock crucifixion (complete with Madonna wearing a fake crown of thorns and being raised on a mirrored cross), the singer showed images of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini followed by images of the Pope. The singer also extended an invitation to Pope Benedict to join the concert fans.
The singer, who is currently on her “Confessions” world tour, treated the fans to somne of her classic hits, including “Like a Virgin,” along with new songs from her current album ‘Confessions on a Dance Floor.’
