Willie Nelson buys a Texas church
By M&C News Jul 5, 2006, 13:15 GMT
Country music icon Willie Nelson plans to help save some local history with the purchase of a Methodist church in Abbott, Texas – where he first began his musical career as a boy.
Nelson took part in a celebration of the church’s preservation on Sunday and performed a number of classical gospel hymns – including "I'll Fly Away" and "Will the Circle be Unbroken."
The small Texas town of Abbott is located south of Dallas and has about 300 residents. The church has records back to before 1886, but was closed in May. At one time it had as many as 600 members, according to information on its historical marker.
