American Idol Studdard wins $2 million in lawsuit trial

Ruben Studdard, the American Idol winner from 2003, won big in court when a judge awarded him $500,000 for personal losses and $1.5 million in damages in a lawsuit filed against his former manager.

The suit (filed last year) claimed the manager Ronald W. Edwards and his company, Sez Inc., was guilty of misusing Studdard’s personal money and his credit cards for a total of about $250,000. The judge did dismiss the company from the lawsuit due to a bankruptcy filing. He found that the manager had used Studdard’s funds to help payoff a $10,000 bank loan.Although Studdard won the American Idol competition, his career has not seen the size of success that runner-up Clay Akin has found. The singer first album ‘Soulful’ debuted at #1 on the sales charts and helped Studdard receive a Grammy nomination for the single “Superstar.”Studdard’s new album, ‘Return of the Velvet Teddy Bear,’ is scheduled to be released sometime in August and is said to go back to the singer’s R&B heritage.
