Singer Stevie Wonder to mark anniversary of Detroit riots with a concert
By M&C News Jun 9, 2006, 17:41 GMT
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame superstar Stevie Wonder will participate in a concert event at Ford Field in Detroit in observance of the 40th anniversary of the riots that rocked Detroit in 1967. The concert is scheduled to be held on July 27th in 2007, and other entertainers are expected to be announced.
The concert, which is being organized by a number of different groups, is one portion of a planned 40-day event that will remember the five days of riots that left 43 people dead and hundreds injured. More than 2,000 stores were reported looted during the riot – which is described as an example of Detroit’s fall from being a leading industry city.
In addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Wonder is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Since his first hit at the age of 13, Wonder has won numerous awards – including an Oscar for Best Song, and 21 Grammy awards.
