AFI returns with Decemberunderground
By Patrick Luce Jun 6, 2006, 17:16 GMT

As AFI rode onto mainstream radio playlists with their gleaming major label debut, Sing the Sorrow, the rumble of disenchanted fans nearly drowned out that of their dark-hued music. But the heavily-tattooed San Francisco band aren\'t looking back on Decemberunderground, a slickly-produced, MTV-friendly disc brimming with sinister pop charms. The opening "Prelude 12/21" sets the upbeat tone with handclaps, strings, and a cheeky glam-rock stomp. AFI might still operate in ...more
Alternative rockers AFI (A Fire Inside) have released their seventh studio album “Decemberunderground” – which might be bit of a change to fans of the group thanks to its more electronic and somewhat pop sound.
The first single “Miss Murder” off the 12-track album is already heating up on radio play and the video for the song is on heavy rotation on MTV.
The album is described as maintaining the band’s notable guitar riffs, but blending that sound with more melody to show the musical evolving talents of the AFI’s members.
AFI was first formed in 1991 and the group released a handful of EPs on minor labels before making the jump to the Dreamworks label with the release of “Sing the Sorrow” in 2003.
This album went on to reach #5 on the billboard charts and certified gold status. The group was nominated and won an MTV Video Award for its “Girl's Not Grey” video in 2003.
Decemberunderground is available at Amazon. Visit the music database for more information and a complete track listing.

This CD IS far from the average East Bay hardcore of AFI, but it is still a masterpiece. From the haunting introduction to the stunning closer, the album plays like your favorite worn out Joy Division vinyl. The lyrics are poetic and oddly warm as expected. The band show no signs of stopping and will always keep on changing their sound, regardless of what 'fans' say. 5/5.
Sing the Sorrow went Platinum on Christmas Eve 2005.
