Quincy Jones to organise Hong Kong handover party

Hong Kong - Quincy Jones is set to organise a music festival to mark 10 years since Hong Kong left British colonial rule and returned to Chinese sovereignty, a media report said Saturday. The four- or five-day event could feature a concert for up to 500,000 people to celebrate the handover on July 1, the South China Morning Post reported. 'The festival will become a global gumbo where Chinese pop, classics and western music mix together,' the US composer and music impresario was quoted as saying. 'We are planning to make the festival part of a series of events across the mainland, like Shanghai and Beijing,' A government official confirmed that Jones had been approached to arrange the festival. Jones, 73, organised a charity concert in Rome last year that attracted more than 500,000 people and featured celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Naomi Campbell. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
