Springsteen blasts government in New Orleans
May 2, 2006, 3:15 GMT
New Orleans - Superstar Bruce Springsteen has launched a bitter attack on the US government, saying it displayed 'criminal ineptitude' in dealing with the crisis of Hurricane Katrina.
'I saw sights I never thought I'd see in an American city,' he said during a performance at the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans. 'The criminal ineptitude makes you furious.'
Springsteen's performance was the high point of the weekend festival that also featured shows by Bob Dylan, The Dave Matthews Band and Elvis Costello.
He adapted a depression-era classic called How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live? to reflect the horror of Hurricane Katrina, with lyrics about 'bodies floating' in the street and levees which had 'gone to hell.'
The hurricane led to the destruction of much of New Orleans and the oil-rich Gulf coast, and left 1,300 people dead in Louisiana alone.
The festival resumes next weekend with Paul Simon, Irma Thomas, Keith Urban, Jimmy Buffett, Buckwheat Zydeco and Fats Domino, who hasn't performed in public since being evacuated from his damaged Ninth Ward home after Katrina.
