Rolling Stone China in trouble?
By Trent McMartin Mar 31, 2006, 0:38 GMT
China’s version of Rolling Stone magazine was launched only two weeks ago but already its future is in doubt.
According to officials at the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau, there was a “problem with formalities.”
“What we stopped was the publishing cooperation between Rolling Stone and Audiovisual World,” an official told AP.
Hao Fang, Rolling Stone China’s chief editor, promised that the second issue will be on newsstands next month: “What I can tell you is that we’re still working as usual.”
Rolling Stone has partnered up with Audiovisual World to get a Chinese licence to publish. In China, foreign magazines are required to find domestic companies to partner up with to obtain a license.
Rolling Stone China's first issue hit newsstands March 6 and virtually sold out within days of its release. The edition featured Chinese rock star Cui Jian on the cover and contained articles on Taiwanese pop star star Jay Chou and U2 singer Bono.
