U2 is filthy rich
By Trent McMartin Mar 16, 2006, 16:45 GMT
Irish band U2 have topped Rock's Top Thirty Moneymakers list of 2005. Bono and the boys made an estimated $154.2 million last year from their worldwide Vertigo tour and album sales of the group’s 2004 hit record How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
U2 are the only act to break $100 million on the list only because the Rolling Stones, who came second with $92.5 million, started their hugely successful Bigger Bang world tour later in the year. Geriatric country-rockers The Eagles were ranked at $63.2 million, followed by former Beatle Paul McCartney at $56 million and “Rocket Man” singer Elton John at $48.9 million.
Number six was Neil Diamond at $44.7 million, Jimmy Buffett was number seven at $44 million. Rod Stewart was eight at $40.3 million, the Dave Matthews Band pulled in $39.6 million and Celine Dion closed out the top 10 at $31.5 million.
