Los Angeles - Veteran rock band The Rolling Stones were the top-earning musical act in the U.S. in 2005, bringing in 168 million dollars in sales of concert tickets and CD's, according to figures released Tuesday by Forbes magazine.
Irish rockers U2 were second with a total of 150 million dollars, followed by country star Kenny Chesney with 110 million dollars.
The magazine reported that the list was dominated by successful touring acts, underlining the high prices that bands with older fans were able to charge for concert tickets, often reaching an average of 100 dollars. Total album sales were down some 7 per cent in 2005, continuing a downward spiral prompted by internet file-sharing and increased competition from video games and DVD movies.
Punk band Green Day were fourth with combined sales of 99 million dollars, followed by The Eagles with 84 million dollars and Paul McCartney with 83 million dollars.
Celine Dion was the seventh-best earner, notching up 81 million dollars, followed by rapper 50 Cent at 79 million dollars, Dave Matthews at 74 million dollars and Elton John at 66 million dollars.
