Los Angeles - Two-of-a-kind was the norm at the 33rd Annual American Music Awards with Destiny's Child, Tim McGraw, Kelly Clarkson, Green Day and the Black Eyed Peas each picking up a pair of statuettes Tuesday, but despite having the most nominations, Mariah Carey only left with one. Pop diva Carey, who led the field with four nominations, was only awarded favourite female artist in the soul/R&B category.
'Thank you so much for the warmth and the love,' Carey said as she accepted her award.
Carey lost out to Gwen Stefani for favourite female artist in the pop/rock category and in the pop/rock and soul/R&B best album category to Green Day and Destiny's Child respectively. . Carey opened the ceremony at the Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. with a performance of 'Don't Forget About Us'. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer the three-hour ceremony telecast live on ABC also included performances by Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Kenny Chesney, the Eurythmics, Santana and Los Lonely Boys.
Though now split, the former girl trio Destiny's Child won the award for favourite band, duo or group in the soul/R&B category, and for their record, 'Destiny Fulfilled'.
'This feels very awkward being up here by myself,' said Kelly Rowland, the lone representative of the group. 'I miss my girls, Beyoncé and Michelle, wherever you are. I love you so much.'
McGraw won the favourite male artist and favourite album prizes in the country category, bringing his AMA award total to eight.
'American Idol' winner Clarkson was named favourite adult contemporary artist as well as a viewers' choice award determined by text messages sent in by the television audience.
Besides the best album win, rockers Green Day also earned favourite artist in the alternative music category.
The Black Eyed Peas were named favourite group in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories.
Not present to pick up their trophies were Clarkson, the Black Eyed Peas, Green Day as well as Eminem, who won rap/hip-hop favourite male artist, and 50 Cent for favourite album in the same category.
