Jun 27, 2005, 13:27 GMT
Berlin - Symphonic conductor Daniel Barenboim is to conduct the Israeli-Arab Youth Orchestra in an unprecedented concert on the West Bank in August, it was announced in Berlin Monday.
The concert will take place in Ramallah on August 21, marking the first time that such an Arab-Israeli cross-cultural event has taken place in the Palestinian territories, according to an announcement by Berlin's Unter den Lindon State Opera.
Barenboim co-founded the orchestra in 1999 with the late Edward Said as a cultural tool for bringing together Israelis and Arabs.
In Ramallah, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante Number 297b.
Barenboim last year received the Givat Haviva Peace Center award for promoting peace in the Middle East.
The Israeli conductor was praised for promoting understanding between Israelis and Palestinians. He is a well-known critic of Israel's settlement policy.
