The Phantom of the Opera Reviewed

By Amy Somensky Jan 10, 2005, 4:57 GMT

Nothing a dermatologist can't handle
A film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera has been thrown around for years, and now it is here, just like it says, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. A big, bold, and brash musical spectacle.

Based on Gaston Leroux’s novel of the same name, The Phantom of the Opera has been made over more times than I can remember. A deformed man is hidden in the Paris Opera House to escape the cruelty shown to him. He grows up in the theater shunned away from any human contact until he meets a young aspiring singer, Christine Daae. He immediately falls in love with her and takes her under her wing to nurture her voice. When Christine’s father died he promised her he would send her the Angel of Music and she believes the Phantom is her angel. Christine gets her big break and becomes the star of the Opera House. Things get complicated when her childhood sweetheart, Raoul, becomes the patron of the opera house and recognizes Christine and pledges his love. The Phantom, now enraged with jealousy and possessiveness vows to make Christine his and gain revenge on Raoul.

Blood against her skin
The look of this film is phenomenal. With all its swirling camera movements the film is lush, lavish, and dazzling. The film opens with a black and white flashback of a very convincingly aged wheelchair bound Patrick Wilson as Raoul. The film then makes a spectacular transition to brilliant Technicolor. The opera house magically transforms back to its past splendor and glory. Apparently director, Joel Schumacher, liked this idea so much that he used it many times, but there were far too many black and white flashbacks in the film. The first sequence established the fact that Raoul was remembering the story. The rest of the flashbacks detract from the flow of the story. The film is beautifully lit. Many times only half of the actors faces are bathed in light, reminiscent of the mask of the Phantom. During the Point of No Return sequence, the red curtains look like blood against Emmy Rossum’s skin. The costumes are first rate, although I think Christine must have been cold hanging out in the snow in all those skimpy costumes.

This film is not without its problems. Having seen the stage version a few times, I cannot avoid comparing the two. All the mystery and fear has been removed from the character of the Phantom. He is no longer scary or terrifying. His deformity is reduced to little more than a skin rash. Changes made to the stage version are a detriment to the film. It is established that the Phantom is a magician, but all the magic is taken out of his skills. Instead of using magic to gain his way, the audience is shown how he accomplishes things. We are shown how he switches Carlotta’s throat spray, and instead of magically bringing down the chandelier he is seen cutting the ropes. In the sword fight with Raoul, the fireballs thrown by the Phantom are gone, now he is just armed with a sword. At the beginning of the second act during the masquerade ball, the Phantom appears after months of being away in a terrifying black and red costume. In the film he wears just a red suit. There is nothing scary about it.

The film is very slow paced at times and there is some sloppy lip synching. I must say there was one scene that just bothered me. During the masquerade ball the Phantom appears and directs his attention to Christine. Raoul, her now fiancé, leaves her side. He appears again on the other side of the room suddenly adjusting his pants. In actuality he is applying some type of holster and goes to the other side of the room to attack the Phantom, but it appears as if he had to make a fast break to hit the bathroom. It just looked very strange.

<!--page-->

Angelic Suitor or Jealous Madman? Gerard Butler as The Phantom
The cast of the film overall does a respectable job. Gerard Butler does a fine job showing the madness, compassion, and sympathy the Phantom feels. He transitions from angelic suitor to jealous lover to a madman wonderfully. The final scene of the first act where he vows revenge and declares “you will curse the day you did not do all that the phantom asked of you” is spine tingling. He hit it dead on, but I have said it before, he does not have the vocal ability to sustain the notes in the musical. He cannot hit any of the high notes. When he tries he comes off as screaming. The deficiency is not as glaring in the film as it is in the soundtrack though because there are other things to focus your attention on.

Emmy Rossum as Christine Daae
Emmy Rossum as Christine is the emotional center point of the film. Although she has very few facial expressions, the vulnerability of the character comes through. I also thought her singing sounded much better than it already sounded on the soundtrack. She looks beautiful throughout the film, especially when she makes her opera debut.

Patrick Wilson does what he can with the very thin character of Raoul. The character has been fleshed out a bit, turning him into a kind of swashbuckling hero. His affection for Christine is evident, and like the other two his singing sounded better in the atmosphere of the film. In real life he is not bad to look at, but I couldn’t help but chuckle every time I looked at his long goofy hair.

What's with the hair? Patrick Wilson as Raoul

Other notable members of the cast are Minnie Driver as Carlotta who offered some much needed comic relief in a film that takes itself way too seriously. Ciaran Hinds and Simon Callow are very funny as the opera house owners. They add to the characters in the stage version.

All the efforts of the cast cannot overcome what is not Andrew Lloyd Webber’s best musical score. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of the musical and do enjoy it, but for all its good parts, one cannot overlook the repetitiveness of the score. I enjoy when a theme is repeated to remind us of another part of the story or character, but when it is done over and over it becomes glaringly obvious. The second half of the story is better and The Point of No Return has always been my favorite and is done beautifully seductive in the film.

I have a hunch that Phantom die hards will love this film. It is no Chicago for the reason that Phantom is more of a traditional musical and will not likely appeal to many non musical fans or make any converts.

I totally agree with your point of view... Though, something is really bothering me: The movie crashed and burned in the box office and everyone's blaming Gerard Butler's performance.
This really makes me mad, because one of the things I enjoyed most of this film is the feeling he can manage to show, whether he can sing or not... It's said that Lloyd Webber's casting was extremely difficult and if he was chosen for the part, it's because he really does a great job.
I just have one thing to say to all of those who judge Butler's performance so harshly: I would LOVE to see you do it better... I want to see an Oscar for Best Actor in your hands. You don't have it? Well then, stop ruining his career with your little comments like that.

Phantom and Butler are classics! Gerard Butler's Phantom is perfect. He brings considerable acting skills and a warm baritone to the role. Every female I know loves his doomed character as evidenced by the sniffles all around me. Maybe guys just don't get it?

Thank you! Thank you, the first person who posted a comment (I'm sorry I can't remember your name), because I completely agree. You really should never criticize someone unless you know you could do a better job. Who would have played the Phantom if not Gerard Butler? Can you imagine Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt? Yuck! Yuck a thousand times over! Mr. Butler's performance (though his vocals are slightly strained at a few points) is wonderful for the screen adaptation--in the theatrical production, one's movements, dialogue, and make-up must be somewhat exaggerated--hence the stage Phantom's balletic movements and such--but for a movie, the character must be more real, hence Gerard Butler quite sensibly did not do outrageously silly movements or stunts, which would have made him look ghastly. He had a difficult task to perform, considering all of the die-hard phans out there that are shredding him to death with their ill-chosen remarks and insults.

You're wrong, honorable reviewer. This movie made many, many converts where I come from. People who said before hand that they 'hate musicals' and asked 'Is there a lot of singing?' with a cringe. These people--including my third grade teacher, a seven-year-old girl, a nine-year-old boy and group of too-cool-for-musicals twelve-year olds, and several more adults and teenagers--are in love with this movie, and have bought the soundtrack and seen the film over and over again. These people are true converts! This movie has done something I've never seen happen before. I've seen it eight times thus far, and I am planning on seeing it again at least once more before it leaves theaters this week. The first time I saw it was early February--well over a month ago--and my friends and family and I have been able to talk about nothing and sing nothing since. It has this crazy effect--it's like an epidemic. Gerard Butler is the love of my life, and my brother's idol. His voice strained at places, yes, but the emotion that came with the strains was so sexy and endearing that I wouldn't have it any other way. And the way he moves--it's intoxicating. I know no one who disagrees with me on these points. He was fantastic--we're all astounded at our reactions. I've never been starstruck before now, always laughed at and mocked people who got crushes on actors--but I've finally found one who's worth it, and I think I've finally gone insane. I've actually began renting every movie Gerard plays in just to see him...and the females I know will watch with me and we will drool over his bright, deep eyes, perfect lips and rough, rich Scottish accent. This man is amazing, and I wish him the best--after all, that's what he is.

So far I agree with what everyone has said....Gerard Butler is most positively the sexiest man I have seen now...I bought the movie and skip to his scenes just to look at him. I have no insults to say, just some strange discrepcencies in the movie that don't add up. Lets start with the beginning. The opera house just seems to show old age, but when the chandelier is brought down, it sets the building to flame? And The Phantom, his right eye, in the mask you see it to look perfectly normal. But when the mask comes off, the bottom is pulled down? I hate the look that is on Christine's face when she is being first pulled to the phantom...and what is with that clothing waving in the air behind her? Lets see what else is there. I don't get the random horse that is in the bottom of the opera house waiting for Christine and The Phantom. And Christine's mannequin is supposed to reach out at her...thats why she faints. But you don't see this. (And another thing, the mannequin looks like her in the beginning, but towards the end when its naked...it looks nothing like her. The hair is straight and black....) And when she faints, and the Phantom lays her down, notice that she is wearing stockings and the slit in her skirt is on her left thigh. But when she awakens, the stockings are gone and the slit is down the middle....did he molest her or something? lol. When The Phantom cuts the rope to the chandelier, where does the sword come from? And I don't like the way they used the rose in the ending...it leaves too much to ponder. Some of these things might be explainable, I just happened to miss them...so if anyone can enlighten me?

THIS FILM WAS TOTALLY OUT OF THIS WORLD. THE WAY IN WHICH THE ACTORS PORTRAYED THE CHARACTERS, GETTING INTO THEIR PSYCHI. THE SETTING WAS OUTSTANDING, AND THE MUSIC ALMOST MADE ME CRY WITH THE OVERWHELMING SOUND. THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BETTER PHANTOMS TO HAVE BEEN MADE, AND IT REACHES OUT TO THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS, MAYBE THEY CAN OPEN THEIR MINDS TO DIFFERENT MUSIC...

I have not exactly saw The Phantom Of The Opera when it came out but like a week to two weeks I finally got to see it. I went to the movies with my mom. She knew since I was a fan of the music and didn't get to see the broadway play that I would like the movie. I do have to admit. I didn't know what to expect because all I heard was words. I really didn't know the story line of the words. Until I see it. So I went to see and absoultely loved the movie. I'd especially loved how the picked the right characters for each part. The Phantom Christine and Rauol well I wouldn't pick no other now. They all had the right parts. I now own the movie and I'd can't get enough of it. I love it I was so looking forward to it. In my heart I give it 5 stars up. If it was up to me. I would of choose the Phantom. I mean if someone could teach me how to sing and wants to be with me. Knowing that he would never harm me. I would give myself to him.

wow i totally loved this film! i will have little or no critisism because i have never seen the show, i loved the movie!! the phantom was sooo hot! especially in the black mask at the masquerade!! personally i wud b happy 2 be locked below a theatre for all eternity with him! (i would prefer he kept the black or white mas on and the black hair thing, sexier!)!! this review says that the phantoms voice was not good enough to reach the high notes and it gave the impression of shouting, but i thought thiswas even better because it showed his madness (even though i did think his voice was amazing!) it just added to his character. i watched the movie 3 times in 1 weekend when i was supposed to be studying (whoops!)

Well I think that those who could do a better job than Gerry are sadly mistaken. Baring in mind that he has had not much (if any) musical teaching prior to the film, and so I advise you to think it through fully before you critise his performance.

On a lighter note, I totally adored the film. The acting was brilliant, the casting was perfect, and the singing was superb.

So shoot me! I loved every minute of it!!

I ABSOLUTELY fell in love with this film! I thought it was amazing. It was so lush and gothic and sexy and tragic! Love it! And I too - as many have - now fallen in love with Gerard Butler. Oh mama! He is just so stunning. I ran out and got the Soundtrack & DVD as soon as they came out. Just this weekend I was skipping to all his scenes just to watch him and I began imagining I was Christine! (Sad, isn't it?!)
I remember thinking his voice wasn't the usual Andrew Lloyd Webber musical type of voice when I first saw the film at the cinema, but the thing was that the gravelly roughness and emotion in his voice just added even more to the film, and made him even sexier! A voice like say, Raoul's would make him too polished and nice. His appeal is that he is mysterious and dangerous and edgy, and that's what his voice represents. I have nothing but good things to say about this film.

At the beginning of the movie two people are bidding for the monkey with the cymbals-are they Rauol and Christine's girlfriend? Or is it Rauol and the lady who saved the Phantom when he was a boy?It seems if Rauol is that old then the lady who saved the Phantom would be dead by that time from old age.

Hey. I would just like to say that The Phantom of The Opera is the best movie of all time in my opinion. It is absolutley fabulous! If people blame Gerard Butler for the movie, I would like to see you do it any better. Andrew Lloyd Webber picked Gerard because he did a really good job. If people can't sing, then Webber won't hire them. So obviously, Butler did a really great job. Sure, there were a couple slip-ups in the movie, but it is a great one regardless. And girls, agree with me on this: The Phantom is so fine! Oh mu god! I was practically drooling in the movie theater! But, Gerard Butler did a fantastic job, and he made me cry a lot of times in the movie. Especially at the end when he sang: 'You alone can make my song take flight. It's over now the music of the night!' He did a great job acting, and I felt like I was there in the room with him. This movie gave me goosebumps, and it made me laugh. If a movie can make anyone cry, it's a GREAT movie!!!!!

The Phantom of The Opera is the best movie ever! It was fabulous: the singing, the acting, the cast members! All of them were terrific! At the beginning of the movie, it is Madame Giry because for one it looks a lot like her! The other lady pushing Raouls' wheelchair was Meg Giry because I looked it up on the Internet! Anyway, this was the best movie I have ever seen in my whole life. It made me laugh, cry, and wonder. One of my favorite parts in the movie is when the Phantom sings: 'I gave you my music. Made your song take wing. And now how you've repaid me, denied me and betrayed me. He was bound to love you when he heard you sing... You will curse the day you did not do. All that the Phantom asked of you!' It gave me goosebumps, and it made me cry! Gerard Butler did a fantastic job on this movie. He is the sexiest man alive! Seriously, can you imagine Orlando Bloom or Chad Michael Murry to play this part! YUCK! I think Andrew Lloyd Webber did a great job choosing cast members. I also think Carlotta did a really good job as well. I don't think she was the best singer, but her acting was really good. I would have to say that the Phantom and Carlotta are my favorite two characters. Don't get me wrong: Raoul and Christine did a great job! But, the Phantom acted more than they did do you know what I mean? I think that Christine is so mean to the Phantom! She made him cry like three times! I was so mad at her when she gave him the ring back! But I have a question: Did the Phantom die at the end? Or did he just run off? Because at the end, Raoul looks at another grave with red roses on it. I hope he didn't die! I swear if he died, I will shoot myslef! LOL just kidding! To rap this message up, I would like to say that this movie is phenomanal, and anybody who doesn't think that is crazy!!!!

God, girls- do you have anything better to do than slobber over Gerard Butler? 'OMG- he's like, sssoooooooooo, like, hot!!!!!!!!' Give me a break. His character is supposed to be seductive, but it's the relationship he has with Christine that emphasizes that. Christine is probably my favourite character, including the POtO, she's so passive I can't decide whether I'd rather ravish her or slap her. =^.^= Overall, very well done I'd say. Good movie!

Gerard Butler seems to navigate to films that do not push his name to the forefront. He has had some excellent roles before Phantom, but POTO was the film that grabbed my heart due to his acting and singing ability. If one had never seen Gerry in anything else, they would never have recognized him in the Phantom role.

The film was awesome. The sets, productions, and acting was excellent. Gerry Butler will go down in filmdom as the ultimate Phantom. It will be difficult for anyone to reprise this role after him.

I am a new convert. I went from knowing nothing about this story, to being a bit overwhelmed by it in the theater. I couldn't make out the lyrics well enough to really understand what was happening. The music haunted me in a pleasant way. When I bought the DVD I watched the movie with subtitles a couple of times and was completely sucked in. I love it so much I watch certain portions repeatedly. I think the actor/singers did an outstanding job. I also own the soundtrack and it is a great favorite now. Even my children like it.

I think everyone involved in this production did a wonderful job. Sorry to disagree with your review.

This movie was great,it makes me laugh when I hear people talk badly of it,though I admit at first veiwing the music thing scared me away then I watched it the next morning and I was hooked my whole family was we played it the rest of the five days we were allowed to keep the movie ,we rented it.

I know of people from 5 years to 40 years that sing the songs alot now after seeing it a month ago. 0_o Andrew Lloyd Webber sucked us in and refused to spit us out.

Gerald was our crowds favorite character ,Christine was the second ,
Raoul was hated.

1. Because they wanted the Phantom to get christine
2. He was too good looking

He's cool with me ,it's not his fault he was so aesthetically pretty.

At the beginning it is Meg Giry and Raoul. Just to clear that up. Also I think it's amazing that both are just the younger people with make up to look old, that is fantastic. I'd also like to say that I strongly disagree with this review, many of my friends who haven't always liked this play are now in love with it, and those who loved it like me still do, even moreso. I think Gerard Butler did an excellent job with the vocals, especially considering he has never taken lessons before this and it is his first musical show. Emmy Rossum was a perfect choice for Christine, she matures very well in the film, going from a lost chorus girl to a woman with choices that affect many lives. And although I personally hate Raoul, (Go Phantom and Christine), Patrick Wilson did a great job of being the fop turned hero. I love Minnie Driver in this movie, her lines are the most classically quoted. ('Get my doggie bring my doggie bye bye.') All in all, this film was excellent! Unbeilevably so!

Critics...Critics...CRITICS!
The film tanked at the box office because of CRITICS successful attempt at shooing away movie goers.
Some suggested it was done in BATMAN fashion as Joel Schumacher was the director after all. What did the idiot critics expect? A front row seat camera angle to a STAGE production? This is HOLLYWOOD, stupid! It's SUPPOSED to be BIG! It's SUPPOSED to be flambouyant! It's not the 'Diary of Anne Frank' for Pete's sake!
It was VISUALLY entertaining enough for most ACTION fans and the music will live on a helluva lot longer than 'Jesus Christ Superstar'! Okay, so I admit the Phantom's theme song IS stuck in the '80s, but the rest of the music was outstanding. Emma Rossum may not have the vocal talent of Sarah Brightman but her age and talent fit the role in MY book!
And so Gerard Butler is a fag? So the hell what? TRY telling me his VOICE was not MANLIER than Michael Crawford's!
I may not agree with him being cast as JAMES BOND, but as the Phantom, his VOICE was the voice I WOULD HAVE preferred to play the part!
Years from now people will rent the movie and SCRATCH THEIR HEADS wondering: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I GO SEE THIS AT THE THEATER?

It litteraly changed my entire life! Emmy Rossum's voice inspired in me to finally reveal that I am also a singer (that is I was always to embarrased to tell anyone that I like to sing) and I finally got the nerve to tell people and took voice lessons to get to where Emmy is. It's awsome! I am now a trained opera singer and I have a huge career in music ahead of me. I just have to thank ALW and the entire cast of Phantom for creating this wonderful masterpiece. I am hoping that others as well as myself will be or have been inspired to do the same.

hi pplz my name is elise, im australian, i absoutly loved the movie totally, emmy rossum is my biggest idol, im 15 years old and allready doing classical and opera singing, im hoping to do musical thearte just like emmy. not like im jelouse or anything, i really look up to her. i really love the song angel of music and wishing you were somehow here again. i sing them all the time. as well as being a musician my self at singing, i aslo play the flute, piano and guitar, but i concertrate more on singng and flute. i would so much love to get up and just see emmy rossum preform she has such a clear young beautiful voice. i dont really know any of the other actors in the phantom, but i noe that just up top about the actor that plays the phantom, i think he is a great muscian, people shouldnt judge musicains on thier singing ability unless they noe that (pplz) can sing better and get out there and prove the actors are bad, but i admrire all the singers in the phantom, and the film really touched my heart! ive seen it over and over again, and i practise the songs 2 hours each day, as well as juggling my flute ans school work, and horseback riding. anyways, the songs have so much life in them and feelings, emotions, and impressions, if anyone has the same intrests as me please email me if you have positive comments towards mine then please email me aswell, hacked_ohdear@hotmail.com, my email is like that coz two girls at my school hacked into my account, they did this, coz my best friend new my password,(oops) yea i told her, and they hacked in and sent emails to everyone, so that is the email i came up wiht and i use it for everything, dont worry pps its not a vurus r anything, lol, allrightys,

All I can say is I've seen the play and now the movie version and prefer the movie version!!! Maybe it's Gerard Butlers's performance and appearance over the play's Phantom and Emmy Rossum was much more believable as Christine than the play's version. I for one would gladly give up the light of day for Gerard's Phantom over that pathetic sniveling Raoul! Even without the mask!! Gerard, you can serenade me anytime, anywhere... I'm in lust with you!

in love with the phantomNov 22nd, 2005 - 23:12:43

I really must agree. The Phantom is an excellent character, one I fell in love with before raoul. His character dragged me into the movie with great depths and the feelings that were portrayed we very moving to me, someone who's emotions are not easily tampered. Gerard butler made you love the phantom for over half of hte movie, as he played a man of mystery and passion. He seduces the female audience and lets the men of the audience see what they lack. Raoul lets you get a glimpse of feeling and emotion but not on a level which most can feel themselves. Near hte end the phantom falls into the original role of a man who is possessive and dominant over the woman, then he shows his true side which one can pity and love at the same time. I personally fell completely in love with gerard buters character, the phantom. While raoul was a great romantic I still loved the man I saw in teh phantom. My sister and a god friemd of ours , both hated musicals, I was watching phantom fo the opera and when they came in at hte scene in Christine's dressing room, during the first part of the song 'Angel of music' They couldn't leave the room. They had their eyes glued to teh tv and finished the movie with me. Then they wanted to see it from teh beggining.
all in all, gerard butler did a great job, and I hvae not met any one yet who had not fallen for the phantom.

Wow, what can I say about this movie? A complete let down. I've seen the stage show three times, and nothing in here is faithful to the show, almost. Whether it be the costume changes, the lyrics, musical score, or acting in general. Who better than Gerard to play the Phantom? Well, Michael Crawford would have been better.. Had the movie come around years ago like it were supposed to, it would have happened.

I was annoyed that Emmy Rossum had almost no facial expression. Her acting and the acting in the movie in general is apalling. The Final Lair (down once more) scene is so robotic. In the stage show, Christine is all over the place. Standing in front of Raoul, being literally THROWN around because she was trying to help him, and here.. what happened? They had Emmy stand by and watch, opening her mouth in complete shock once in a while.

And the fact that Gerard Butler had nothing more than a mere 'sun burn' wouldn't classify him as completely and utterly horrid and disfigured. I agree with the sloppy lip synching on Rossum's behalf. One thing that wasn't mentioned is that Gerard growls. He constantly growls, and sings through his nose. Also, lyrics were come out. The 'In all your fantasies..' line wasn't in the title song. Come to think of it, the intro to the title song was changed completely. And I doubt Emmy Rossum would have been able to shriek that high note as she did, hunched over in a gondola.

The entire lyrics came as a surprise aswell. I knew something was odd the moment I heard 'Think of me', besides it being completely weak on Rossum's behalf. Christine's lyrics were the same as what Sarah Brightman sang in London, and on Raoul's behalf, he sang the part they have the Raouls sing now currently on broadway.

I don't like the other changes either. Chandelier crashing at the end was understandable, but of course. Having Emmy Rossum go out in a cemetery in the middle of winter with THAT dress on was very convincing. And those grey flashbacks and whole 'Raoul re-visiting Christine's grave' thing at the end wasn't nessecary.

And to those of you who keep commenting on how Gerard Butler is 'hot' then you shouldn't be considered 'phans' at all. The man spent hours and hours in makeup and if you see him outside of Phantom, he looks like an average person. (ever watched timeline?)

The stage Phantoms only spent 2 hours in makeup and they come out looking horridif and deformed and Gerard comes out with foundation, eyeliner, and a sunburn and suddenly everyone is 'terrified' of him. Also, Emmy's makeup wasn't good either. The editing problems were laughable.

A stage diva of that era would need an immense amount of mascara, eyeliner, and foundation just to make herself look NORMAL to the audience, and Emmy looked completely washed out in Think of Me. Not to mention, explain to me how dark eye makeup and Emmy's hair suddenly going down can happen just from being with the Phantom for five minutes..

All in all, this movie isn't good at all. See the show, read the book, get the OLC cd. Do anything but see this first, as it will give you a completely false impression of the real thing

Every single time I watch it I fall in love with the phantom even more. Gerard Butler was the best person to play the phantom. Nobody could play the part better then him. Also, Emmy Rossum has an amazing voice and is very pretty. She is my favorite actress. I wish it was me that got to play Christine because it would be the most awesome thing in the world if I got to kiss Gerard Butler. You must see it because trust me you'll love it!

My friend and I had wanted to get another movie at the rental place, and it wasn't there so we picked this up, half-heartedly. by the end of the movie we were mesmorized! We then gave it to our friend who groaned and grumbled being 'too cool for musicals' she watched it and LOVED it.

First of all, I don't see WHY so many seem to HATE RAOUL! After all, what kind of life could the Phantom give Christine but darkness, even though he did truly love her? Another thing: even the Phantom realized at the end of the movie that Christine and Raoul belonged together, and that's why he let them go.
I LOVE the Phantom as played by Gerard Butler, but I also LOVE Raoul as played by Patrick Wilson. Raoul and Christine were meant to be together.
As for Raoul's hair ... I think it looks GREAT ... too bad Patrick Wilson doesn't really wear his hair, if not that long, at least long, but he's still beautiful to look at.
Gerard and Patrick both have so much talent, besides gorgeous looks ... and they act well together. I'd love to see them do another film together.
And that was NOT MEG and Raoul as old people ... it was Madame Giry, Meg's MOTHER, and Raoul.
All in all I'm completely obsessed with this movie ... the actors (especially GB and PW), the characters (especially the Phantom & Raoul), the music, the settings ... my friend and I are in agreement with this ... we watch the movie at least twice a week and play the soundtrack just about every day.

the Phantom of the Opera is a great movie! i love it, from top to bottom.. whoever made such arrogant remarks should not have appreciated it.. the songs were very well sung by everyone in the cast and i think it is 99.9% excellent, of course, there is always room for improvement in that 0.1% left.. but i have no questions asked about the movie and i know of noone who fits better to play the roles of the Phantom, Christine and Raoul.. i really felt like i was in the Phantom's shoes, even though i'm a girl because, his feeling of being heartbroken and being the 'unchosen one' really opened my eyes to the truth that i feel that way.. it alsomade me cry.. the best thing about this movie is that, it is a classic.. and i especially love the songs, 'think of me', 'masquerade', 'the phantom of the opera', 'angel of music', 'wishing you were somehow here again' and 'all i ask of you'.. more power to the three of you, and i appreciate all your effort in making this movie a success..=j good job, heheh..

at last you will see andrew lloyd webbers
classical masterpiece the phantom of the opera
the motion picture immortalised now on dvd
gerard butler (300) delivers the best performance as the tragic phantom in this iconicaly dark tragic love story and emmy rossum (day after tommorow) gives her best
as christine the phantoms love interest
with other best performances by minne driver
(the riches and goldeneye)and simon callow (four weddings an a funeral)
the phantom was legendary played by michael crawford the movie has
many great set pieces and the wardrobes are eliggently stunning it
reminds me of the darkly computer game devil may cry that style
of neo gothic architecture and the phantoms liar reminds me of
the darkly comic book film v for vendetta the phantom of the opera
is great and has a plethora of effects aplenty the phantom of the opera
will have cult following for generations to come 20/10
