THIS MOVIE WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!
Sabrina, you are right. It was horrible.
Look, some of us are getting a little tired of all this adulation instantly bestowed on the Coen Brothers just because they make another movie. (I mean...that IS their job, right?) ALL their stuff now seems to generate glowing reviews whether it's great or not, as if the Bros THEMSELVES have this cult following rather than their movies.
Yeah, they attract all the big name actors, and it's chic' to say their stuff is 'dark' or 'edgy', as if only the 'enlightened ones' can 'get it'.
I guess I don't 'get it' because I found this simply vile and not funny. Well, no accounting for taste...I didn't even think No Country was THAT great. And remember Ladykillers? Ya don't? Oh, I guess EVERYBODY thought that one sucked. Timing is everything, I guess, cuz if it had been their first post-No Country release, it'd likely gotten great reviews!
The Coens have done some amazing stuff; in fact they produced one of my favorites of all time, O Brother Where Art Thou?. Sort of under the radar, that one (except for the great music) but what a sweet movie!; lovable rougues, great cinetography, memorable dialog, and a really neat plot ingeniously woven into the Oddysey and sprinkled with homage to the Wizard of Oz. The Bros hit their high water mark with me on that one, sorta like a valley being flooded by a hyroelectric dam.
Just judge the Coens on effort as it comes out, without the automatic glowing influence of previous favorites, although they should be evaluated by comparison to previous works, not just get a pass from them. Why, compared to O Brother, 'mixaforically speakin'' Burn After Reading actually 'lies at the bottom of a pretty durn deep lake'!
