Movie Review: Flawless

“Patience is a virtue.”

Our story starts off with an elderly Laura Quinn (Demi Moore), in terrible old age makeup, being interviewed for a newspaper article about “women who led.” She’s only really being sought out because most she was the sole woman executive in the London Diamond Corporation and because all of the other ladies are dead. During the interview she produces a large diamond and then proceeds to tell the shocked reporter that she stole it. We flash back to 1960, when African riots threaten the company’s supplies of diamonds. She’s not achieved executive status at this time and has been passed over while less experience males have climbed the ladder. Janitor Mr. Hobbs (Michael Caine) is a rather unassuming elderly man. Hobbs approaches Miss Quinn with a proposition – to procure a 2 million pound retirement fund from the safe. Since Hobbs is considered low man on the totem pole the management is apt to say things around him as if no one was there. He tells Miss Quinn that she’s going to be dismissed in a short time, which she discovers is true. So now she’s in. The robbery goes as planned and maybe a little too well. I’d watch Michael Caine read his laundry list; heaven knows I suffered through Jaws the Revenge and On Dangerous Ground.

To me in this feature Caine comes across as a retired version of Harry Dean, his character from Gambit (1966). He’s a wily and sly old dog whose retirement fund turns out to be much more than he alludes to Quinn. He also has other motives in mind and the fun is figuring out how he got away with it. Moore is okay in the lesser role, but Caine’s natural charisma makes his role seem bigger. There’s a feel good ending that seems a bit out of place, but it still was a fun ride and Caine helps matters immensely. Running Time: 108 minutes

MPAA Rated: PG-13 for brief strong language

This is a decent movie and will hold your interest. I agree with the review. The main reason to watch is Caine, but at times he seems to be on autopilot and is not putting much effort into his performance. Of course, when you are Michael Caine it doesn't take much effort.
