When I first saw this movie I thought that it was only about the costumes and artistic fighting. However, after thinking about it, I saw it as a commentary on a dictatorial leader who would do anything to stay in power. He would destroy his family and any one else who might be a threat. Only those who would follow his plan would be spared. It was then that I saw it as a commentary on the Chinese Communist government. Do what they want and you will be spared. Criticize them and you will suffer. I was reminded of this movie when seeing the current situation in Tibet.
