I wouldn't let myself be discouraged by the reviewer's opion. He missed the boat. It is a touching, distrubing and funny film, with exceptional acting from a variety of new and old-comers, and struggles only with creating a smooth narrative from a book that was so detailed and wide-ranging, it is impossible to completely capture. The book is wickedly funny with incisive, peircing dialogue, and the movie utilizes this well in the screenplay. Though a bit disjointed (owing to the disjointed life of the narrator), the film does find a theme and drives it home with a gentle and effective touch. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but a great film nonetheless.
I totally agree with Ron. This flick will ignite the mind of anyone who has ever ended up in couseling / speaking with a therapist regarding the trivialities of life (with a significant other or otherwise). Especially profound was the mad doctors 'locus of control' and propensity to execute self serving agendas.
I mean come on,- who doesn't wish that they can hypnotize others and spin them into some alternate slave-reality. Don't look now, but if you read the 'official' review you lost all sense of this films underlying / hidden meaning. If you see the film pay extra close attention to the social dynamics of all the characters. There were so many interesting facets to this flick that it is bound to be a cult classic.
I found it the ultimate head trip that can really put one into a state of self reflection for their own selfish and/or personal woes. Carpe Diem kids the grass is not always greener. Now go see the film and decide what are you going to do about the state of your life...
