Ellen Page has signed on for the role of one of English literature's most famous characters - Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre."

Variety reports the film is in development with Alison Owen of Ruby Films (who produced "The Other Boleyn Girl") and BBC Films on the new adaptation of Bronte's 19th century romance.

Moira Buffini has penned the screenplay, but a director has yet to be named. The producers are looking to start shooting the film this fall.

The story follows a mousy governess who warms the heart of her employer Mr. Rochester, but discovers he's hiding a secret.

"Jane Eyre" has been adapted for film or television at least 20 times and is one of the most adapted novels in English literature. BBC recently adapted it into a miniseries which went on to win three Emmys last year.
