DiCaprio's conflict diamonds
By James Wray Jun 30, 2005, 18:12 GMT
Leonardo DiCaprio is negotiating to star in Warner Bros.' thriller The Blood Diamond.
Variety reports Ed Zwick (The Last Samurai) will direct from a script he wrote with Marshall Herskovitz.
The adventure film is set in Sierra Leone during the height of the diamond conflicts at the end of the last century. DiCaprio would play the role of a smuggler who sells 'conflict diamonds,' which are used by various groups for profit and to fund insurrection. However, the smuggler gets to know a local farmer whose son has become a child soldier. From then on their fates are tied together.
Warner is hoping to shoot the film in the spring of next year.
