The film is an adaptation of Susan Sontag's novel 'In America' |
The Hollywood Reporter says Jerzy Skolimowski will direct the $19 million film from a screenplay by Frederic Raphel.
In 1876 a group of Poles led by Maryna Zalezowska (Isabelle Huppert), Poland's greatest actress, emigrate to the United States and travel to California to found a "utopian commune." When the commune fails, Maryna stays, learns English, and—as Marina Zalenska—forges a new, even more triumphant career on the American stage, becoming a diva on par with Sara Bernhardt.
Hopper will play a manager who revives the actress' career. Helen Mirren has also been cast with Harvey Keitel still in talks.
Filming is due to begin at the end of the year in Spain and Poland.
