Bruce Robinson will direct Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary
By James Wray May 18, 2005, 13:54 GMT
Bruce Robinson will direct and adapt the late Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary, with Johnny Depp set to star.
Variety reports Depp, who is also an exec-producer on the film, chose Robinson for his previous work on the likes of Withnail and I and The killing Fields.
The Rum Diary is a tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s. A place where Paul Kemp (Depp) is 30, trapped in a dead end job, and sees his dreams of being a writer fading fast.
Work is expected to begin once Depp finishes up with the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, which he is filming back-to-back.
