This year’s Festival included more than 250 films from 45 countries on six continents, and featured panel discussions, filmmaker events, gala premieres of major studio releases, the Family Festival, and visits by delegations from Sarajevo and Shanghai.
Stolen Life from director Li Shaohong won the Best Narrative Feature. The film follows a young woman who starts college believing she is embarking on a new life away from her family-and she is, but not the new beginning she anticipates. Once at school, she immediately meets Muyu and falls in love with him. What she does not know is that from the moment he met her Muyu began an intricate deception that will lead to the loss of her child and the future she believes in.
Robert De Niro presented the award to Shaohong who also recieved the $25,000 prize.
Best Doumentary Feature went to Péter Forgács' El Perro Negro: Stories from the Spanish Civil War, which takes a look at Spain during the chaotic 1930s, a decade during which this Western European nation descended into barbarism. Joan Salvans was the son of a wealthy Catalan wool manufacturer, and was able to pursue his hobby of skillfully recording events in his family's life on 8mm film from 1929 until July 24, 1936, when, six days after the outbreak of the Civil War, he and his father were murdered by a militant anarchist named 'Pedro el Cruel.'
Speaking at the ceremony De Niro said: “We congratulate the winning filmmakers and look forward to seeing more great work from each of them.”
