Dorothy’s 'Wizard of Oz' Dress Fetches $252,000
By Cindy Locke Apr 27, 2005, 18:03 GMT
The famous blue and white gingham dress Judy Garland wore as she skipped down the yellow brick road sold for $252,000 at an auction, a far cry from the expected $63,000. There were six identical dresses Garland donned during the filming, but the one sold was one of two with secret pockets.
The dress was sold to a bidder via telephone who did not wish to be identified, said Bonhams, the auctioneer. “The dress represents the quintessential magic of childhood in the most beloved film of the 20th century,” said Jon Baddeley, head of Bonhams collector’s department.
