Joss Whedon Elaborates on Wonder Woman

By James Wray Mar 24, 2005, 16:52 GMT

Who will play Wonder Woman...that is the big question...who do you think should?
Last week Warner Bros. Pictures announced that Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, would be writing and directing the forthcoming big screen outing of Wonder Woman. Whedon spoke a bit about the film at last weekend's Wizard World comic book convention in Los Angeles.

MTV reports that Whedon was hesitant at first to take on the job, but the lack of previous movie baggage with the character won him round to the idea.

Speaking about the Wonder Woman character he says: "I think she sort of sprang out fully formed, much like Athena herself. And, you know, it's a question of really getting behind that. ... In the '40s, when it was first done, she came to the world from Paradise Island and then went about her business, and so that experience, which is really a rite of passage, which is the same as any hero has to go through, has never really been investigated the way I want to. So, to take it back to the beginning and really say, 'Well, really, what was it like for an Amazon princess to come amongst us?' "

He also elaborated on the characters special items: "I have a take on all of them. It has to do with who she is, and they have certain integrity. I'm not going to do anything silly.

"There's a reason why she has those bracelets," Whedon said, referring to the Amazon wrist armor that represents her tribe's enslavement under Hercules. "There's a reason why she's got the lasso. I think it's going to work out really well," he said.

Finally when asked about casting he remained coy and said he had no leanings as yet.
