I read the book several times and never were the Lutz family terrorised by the spirits of the murdered DeFeo folks. They were however, terrorised by psychic experiences, unknown and supernatural forces, and a variety of hauntings and spirits but never terrorised by the murdered parents. Kathy did sense that a peaceful spirit would visit her while she was in the kitchen but eventually she would avoid certain rooms in the house due to whatever experience she may expect to have if she entered.
