New Cut Version of The Passion of the Christ

Variety reports that, "The Passion Recut," will see a theatrical release on around 700 screens across the US starting in March.
It seems the cuts have been made so that those who avoided the film due to violent and graphic sceenes leading to Christ's death can now go and see the film.
The release is being timed for Easter following demand and could even be an annual event.

I must agree with you, it will bring in more people to see this beautiful film. But I feel that with it's new editing, you'll still walk away with the same feelings and message, that is; Look at how he suffered for us, by us and with us. Even before the making of this film, we knew what Christ went through, it was violent, cruel and extreme. I feel that this is a great way of touching even more hearts, there nothing wrong with that. Well i think that the old 'THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST' was the better on becuase death is not pritty and that could really have happend to jesus in those days and im only 12 years old i i loved the passion. The movie is a passionet thing becuaes it tells what jesus did for us and the people say that its raciss to the jews but its not they just have to relize that i hope you read this all you peole!!!
I guarantee the Left-wing media will say it is a marketing tool for more money, ya they will make money but that is not why Mel Gibson did this recut. The first cut is probably going to be the better of the two, but I totally understand why they are doing this. Simply to reach other audiences that thought it was to bloody, like the Mormon Church for example. I’m not Mormon and I will never be, but all I have to say is if the Mormons have a problem with it this time, that will show you were their at spiritually (Period). This is not a personal attack on the Mormons by any means, but u half to wonder WHY? They didn't see the first cut. The media will cut this movie down again and again; look how the Oscar Awards turned out. Not one single award was given to this film, which is really sad. I don't think it will change a lot of people’s minds about the film (but I hope I’m wrong). I encourage everybody and every religion to see this film (and don't see it because I told u, see it because u want too!!!).I truly believe it is the one of the best movies of all time. Hi i just wanted to say that even though Mel Gibson cut out the violence it still got an R rating and he was hoping they would give it a PG-13 that is why the movie is unrated so why take out any violence at all? Also if Mel Gibson didnt show the parts that people said where violent it wouldnt have made it so moving the way the first one was that is what made it moving showing what christ had to do to pay for our sins. I am glad though that there bringing it back out and i think that they will keep bringing it back out ever easter for a long time cause from what articles are saying it is in high demand that is the only reason there bringing it out cause alot of people requested it to be brought back on easter.
I agree with part of what james carrete said. What was originally shown on the screen was still not as bad as what Christ went through. For people to say they would not watch it because of its violence makes me scratch my head. Our Lord and Savior was nailed to a cross!!!
If it hurts to watch then you should be on the ground like I was wanting to yell, 'Stop hitting Him!' Feeling completely broken realizing just how man in the flesh does not deserve the gift that God gave us.
The original cut is as close as we can get. What are you scared of?

I am a little disapointed, I had hoped the recut of 'The Passion' would contain an exstended message on 'The Resurrection' of The Christ and less the death of Jesus. I wonder if Mel has put any thought into this very important theme. We must come to realize that as horrible as the crucifixion was, the Resurrection is the point of it all.
I like the idea of a recut version. I saw the Passion at the movies and loved it and I own the DVD of the original version but I simply feel the excessive violance is just too unbarable to watch for entertainment purposes. I have yet to finish the DVD. I am a 32 year old male who has NOOOO problem with graphic violance in movies but I was able to understand the seriousness and sacrifice of Jesus's torture in the first 30 seconds and did not need to watch 10 minutes of beatings to get the point. I dont have to touch a hot stove to know it burns. I am looking forward to the re-release of this film and will go see it and re-purchase the DVD hwen it comes out.
Hi i just wanted to tell Nostrum72 that i read that there not going to put the recut version on dvd cause there nver going to bring it out on video this is just for the theaters which seems kind of dumb to me but hey Mel Gibson decided not to bring it out on video. ANd also people should watch Ebert and Roper i think thats there names but watch them tommorow march 6 they are the ones who review the movies and they should have The Passion of the christ the recut version and they are going to tell if it was any good or not since Mel removed some of the blood and i heard he removed about 5 to 6 minutes of the viloence during when they where beating with the cat of nine tails. So everyone watch it tommorow it usually starts late well where i live it starts at 12 at night but it might start early where you are so check your tv guide.
Ihave to say,that I see no reason for there to be any part of this film cut.Thefact is that if you have seen the first Passion,you will feel some how cheated or let down by this Passion.The movie is about Jesus suffering for our sins,not the entier life of the being.Any Christain knows that Jesus was beat down hard,so why would it be such a shock to see actors on film re tell the story.What gets me,is thefact that we seem to be able to accept real life crimes and such,but can not deal with a movie...something is wrong there.Ithink Mel toned it down a bit from how it was.He should have maed it even more bloody.Ialso think that the Jews should accept the fact that Jesus was a jew and they turned him over to the Romans,because they did not want to hear what he had to say about the way they were doing things,just as we would do today.We do not bash your faith,stop bashing ours.Jesus was a jew and rejected your ways...fact.Go see the movie,it would not have made all that money if it was not a great film from the start.If you and your children can watch Bang,shoot 'em up films,then you can watch the crucifixtion of God.
This movie was one person's interpretation of the crucifixion. The movie was gory for the sake of shock value, and did nothing except focus on the violence done against Christ. Thematically, if the movie was supposed to have anything to do with Christ other than 'Look at how much Christ suffered. No, I mean it--LOOK,' then it failed. Plotwise, it was a microstudy of the testosterone-laden graphic violence that could only be accomplished with neat digital effects.
In other words, if you don't have a pre-programmed set of beliefs, you're not going to get much out of the Passion about why his death mattered.
To me, the recut is just a way for Gibson to make more money off of people who ironically mistake graphic violence to be a religious experience only because it's Christ on the cross. If it had been about anyone else other than Jesus, the movie (and note I use the term 'movie' here, not 'film')would've been widely panned as being just another violent snuff-flick.

I wanted to comment on the young man who spoke of the 'passion' being recut because of people like the Mormons. Well I am a member of the church and the reason that most Mormons may not have seen it is because we are counseled (suggested by our church leadership) to avoid R rated movies, because of the violence and sexual promiscuity in most of them and an 'r' rating is and 'r' rating period. Even many PG13 movies are offensive. I took a kids group to see Jersey Girl, and I walked out, as they had mant references to pornaography, masturbation, they used the 'f' word and many other foul words. That was a movie that was supposed to be ok for 13 year olds and I was highly offended. I will be glad to go see the 'Passion' recut. I and many other LDS I know want to support better standards of broadcasting. I want to support Mel Gibson in this, as Hollywood has made it a point to ignore this masterful movie enactment of Christ Trial and death. I must confess , I did go see it, not to be a hypocrite, but to support Mr. Gibson in showing this event to the world. I would not show this to my children in the same format, as it is much too graphic. Even though it was a movie, you felt pulled in and I was so emotionally touched that I could only be silent. I did gain a better understanding of Christ suffering and what He went through. I will be glad to see about taking my family to see the recut if it is given a PG type rating, and it will reach more people who are more then happy to support the good work of directors like Mel Gibson.
I loved the original Passion...I thought that it got the point across very well, and really I think that cutting it is going to make it less intense but also take away from the movie...I think that people needed to see what all happened to Jesus, and realize what he went through for us... I do, however, think that cutting the movie will be good so that younger children can see it, and so that people that stayed away from it because of all the violence can see it...That way everyone can at least get the message of Jesus...I think that is the most important thing.

The amazing thing to consider is that the suffering that Jesus was subjected to in the movie the Passion is only a fraction of what Jesus went through. Dont get me wrong Mel did a great job and the movie is is a piece of art as far as im concearned!!This is a time to reflect on what Jesus did for us and im so glad that the movie is being shown again during this Easter/Reserection time!! I think that in time it will be aired on national tv for all to see!! I hope!! God Bless
We want to start by saying that we absolutely loved the original version of The Passion. I, (Cassie) have two young sisters and feel that a cut version is necessary for younger people. I want them to see what Christ went through for them, but at the same time, I don't want them to have nightmares!! I, (Bayleigh) think that the first Passion is great because of the fact that it portrays the entire truth.. no sugar coating. I don't think that it's a bad idea to make a new one, because it will let people who are younger or don't know about the true sacrifice Jesus did for us. Making a new Passion is fine with me!!
My problem with this film is simple. It is only to make money. People can say BS like it is toned down to make it better for kids but it is not in the original movie Jesus is beaten to a pulp for 2 hours how much was removed for this recut? 5 minutes total was removed, that is it. Watching a man be beaten bloody for 1 hour and 55 mins is not that different. Now I know a lot of people are gonna to say 'you don't know. This is what Christ went through for you and all of us.' No, this is what Christ went through according to the dreams of an old French nun that is what the movie is based on. Jesus being beaten was stated in the Bible but it didn't go truly into detail so this depiction can not be dubbed 'the close account to what Jesus went through'. The fact of the matter is this movie doesn't even really get into who Christ really was. If you hadn't known who Jesus was before you saw the movie after all you would know is he was beaten to death and may have died due to crucifiction although if you pay attention to the movie Jesus was already dying after the first beating and given the intense bloodloss you can't say he went through a lot of pain because he would start to lose feeling after bleeding so much. That is it. But people are too blind to realize that they are too busy looking at their WHITE, BLUE-EYED, LONG BROWN HAIRED, made up image of Jesus and they will buy whatever that image sells. YOu all truly are sheep and you will eat up whatever anyone throws on the floor with out even thinking.
As a Christian all I can say is Gibson should be ashamed of himself.

i think the recut is a good thought. although i must admit that i feel it is a way to somehow hide from the truth. of course it does give younger and more elderly audiences a chance to focus more on the person of Jesus and not just the violence.
