Well it is the 5th of November again and for all those in the UK time to celebrate Guy Fawkes' abortive attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
For those who do not know the story in 1605 Guy Fawkes and a band of conspirators decided that in order to make the state more tolerant to Catholics they would blow up Parliament.
They got hold of 36 barrels of gun powder and put them under the House of Lords. However, some of the group were having second thoughts and warned some friends to stay away. This reached the King and Fawkes was caught in the act of trying to light the barrels. Needless to say he was tortured and excuted.
Ever since people in the UK gather round bonfires and burn effigies of Mr Fawkes as well as lighting lots of fireworks.
I reckon we have mixed feeling as to whether we are celebrating his failure or his attempt to blow up all those politicians!
Anyway, enjoy the night and be safe. I am off to watch the display down by the river.
