This is unconfirmed, but here is what our source said.
"Russell Crowe has bitten the ear off Eucalyptus. The production of Eucalyptus has fallen over. Sydney Production office is packing up.
Russell Crowe was a disastrous choice for such a sensitive role (the storyteller).
Anyone who has read the book would realise the mis-casting. He was way too old for the story teller - who was the opposite to an ear biting drunken middle aged thug.
Russell wanted complete control over who was cast as "Ellen". He demanded that she be blonde (oh I wonder why?) and with him as the storyteller - she had to be older than the 19 to 20 year old Ellen in Murray Bails novel.
Director and producers could not agree with Russells preferred 'women' for the role of the young Ellen.
Fox/Searchlight announced that if Russell was not on board, they would pull the finance.
Perhaps a blessing in disguise.
Hopefully Jocelyn Moorehouse will find independant funding and be able to cast appropriately for this magnificent script.

Certainly interesting stuff and a pity since it is a great story. Maybe they will get alternative backing.
