'Twilight' director Catherine Hardwicke thought the original script for the film was 'horrible'.
The film maker helmed the first episode in the vampire movie franchise - starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart - but was initially put off by the script, and only agreed to make it after reading the original novel by Stephenie Meyer.
She told New York Magazine:I thought the script was horrible, but then I looked it up on the internet and I thought, 'OK, it's based on a book and people tend to like it. There's gotta be something there'.'So I read the book and I thought it captured that feeling of being madly in love. And I thought, 'That's kind of a good challenge, to see if, as a filmmaker, I could make you feel that giddy, crazy'.'
Catherine only agreed to direct the film if the studio, Summit, let her rewrite the script.
Robert - who plays vampire Edward Cullen in film series - has previously said his character was written so well he personally can relate to the feelings of love he has in the film.
He said: 'I guess I must be [like him] because everyone is always telling me that Edward is kind of old-fashioned, but I always see him as fairly normal. I mean, he just knows what he wants. He's in love with someone and he just likes the idea of getting married to them. I guess I kind of agree with that.'
