The Artist wins Directors Guild prize
Jan 29, 2012, 11:14 GMT
Los Angeles - The Artist, an almost-silent black-and-white homage to the glory days of Hollywood, received top honours late Saturday from the Directors Guild of America (DGA).
The movie was directed by Hollywood outsider Michel Hazanavicius, a Frenchman who has, until now, been more active in making commercials in his native country.
The prestigious prize is often seen as a major step towards winning the Best Picture Prize at the Oscars, which will be awarded February 26.
Only six times in 63 years has the winner of the DGA award failed to go on to win the Oscar for best director. The last prize winner not to go on to Oscar glory was Rob Marshall, who got the DGA award in 2002, but lost out to The Pianist by Roman Polanski at the Oscars.
The Artist has been nominated for 10 Oscars.
All of Hazanavicius' contenders were previous award nominees or winners.
The other nominees wer: Hugo, a 3D adventure by Martin Scorsese; Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by David Fincher; and The Descendants, by Alexander Payne.
