'Hugo' leads with 11 nominations for 84th Academy Awards

Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" is the early leader in the race for the 84th Academy Awards with 11 nominations, including best picture, directing, and adapted screenplay.

Nine films received best picture Oscar nominations, the first year in which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), allowed for the number to shift between five and 10.

In addition to "Hugo," "The Artist," "The Descendants," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "The Help," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball," "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse" will all compete for Best Picture.

The Oscar nominations were presented by 2010 Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Sherak, president of AMPAS, early Tuesday morning from AMPAS' Beverly Hills headquarters.

This year's Academy Awards ceremony will take place February 26, from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Billy Crystal will host the show for the ninth time.
