Golden Rasperry Awards avoid Oscar clash with April Fools move
Jan 24, 2012, 13:25 GMT
Los Angeles - The most dubious honour in Hollywood is about to get even more embarrassing, as organisers of the Razzie Awards - for the year's worst movies - have announced a change in the event's schedule this year.
Instead of presenting the Golden Raspberry Awards on the eve of the Oscars, as has been done since the inception of the event in 1980, the awards will now be announced and presented on April 1, April Fools Day.
Announcement of the nominees will be made a day before the Oscar show, on February 25, the organizer said on Sunday.
The move will allow the Razzies' more than 600 members 'additional time to see the drek (trash) thy will eventually nominate,' as well as giving more time for input from the general public, organizers said in a press release.
Moving out of the way of the Oscars may also improve the chances that the winners attend in person.
The only major star to accept her award on stage was Sandra Bullock in 2010, when she picked up the Worst Actress trophy for her role in All About Steve, a day before being named Best Actress at the Oscars for Blindside.
This year, organizers predicted that Adam Sandler could be in line to break Eddie Murphy's record for the most Razzie nominations in a single year, thanks to his activities as an actor, producer and writer in three top contenders for the Worst Picture choices: Bucky Larson, Jack & Jill and Just Go With It.
Last year's awards were dominated by M Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, which won Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.
