Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko have been cast as the two female leads opposite Tom Cruise in Universal Pictures' untitled sci-fi action film.
According to Variety, the film had been formerly called "Oblivion" and "Horizons."
Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy") is directing with a release date set for July 19, 2013.
Production is expected to begin in the spring.
The film had been set up at Disney which ended up passing on the project due to the fact that the film would be PG-13 and Disney wanted a PG film.
William Monahan wrote the original script with Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt having done rewrites.
The film is based on an idea by Kosinski that ended up being a graphic novel written by Barry Levine.
Kosinski and Levine are producing along with Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark.
The story is set in an apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds above an uninhabitable earth. An earthbound soldier (Cruise), who fixes drones that destroy a hostile alien life form, encounters a beautiful woman whose ship crashes.
Jessica Chastain had been cast as one of the female leads but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
Riseborough is coming off her starring role as Wallis Simpson in Madonna's "W.E."
Kurylenko is best known for her role in the 2008 James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."
