Los Angeles - The Artist, a silent movie tribute to the early years of Hollywood, extended its dominance of the awards season Friday, just two days before it is tipped to win big at the Golden Globes awards Sunday night.
The film, by French director Michel Hazanavicius, was named Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards Thursday, where it also won Best Director, Best Score and Best Costume Design. The bawdy chick flick Bridesmaids was named the year's Best Comedy.
Civil rights drama The Help about black maids in the 1960s won three trophies, for lead actress Viola Davis, supporting actress Octavia Spencer and the ensemble cast.
George Clooney was named Best Actor for his role as the harried father in The Descendants, beating out rivals such as Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Drive was named best action movie, while Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris won for best original script and Brad Pitt's Moneyball for Adapted Screenplay.
