By Adnan Tezer Jan 10, 2012, 20:23 GMT
George Clooney has purchased the option rights for the nonfiction book "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the book was written by Robert M. Edsel with contributor Bret Witter.
Clooney will direct and star in the film.
He will also adapt the screenplay and produce with his Smoke House Pictures partner Grant Heslov.
Sony Pictures will distribute the film.
The book details the story of a group of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, who risked their lives to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of art treasures in Europe stolen by Hitler and the Nazis during World War II.
Clooney is an Oscar favorite for his role in "The Descendants" and for directing "The Ides of March."
