Scorsese and Allen earn Directors Guild nods
Jan 9, 2012, 20:24 GMT
Los Angeles - Martin Scorsese boosted his chances for Oscar glory Monday when his 3D adventure Hugo was one of five nominees chosen for the Directors Guild Awards.
The association of US directors also saluted veteran helmer Woody Allen for his whimsical romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, as well as David Fincher's thriller The Girl with Dragon Tattoo.
The remaining nominees were Alexander Payne, for his well received family drama The Descendants, and Michel Hazvanicius, for his remarkable silent film tribute The Artist.
Both Scorsese and Allen are past DGA winners - Scorsese for The Departed in 2006, and Allen for Annie Hall in 1977.
The notable snubs not making the DGA's shortlist were Steven Spielberg's War Horse and Terence Malick's The Tree of Life, both of which are regarded as strong Oscar contenders.
However their Oscar chances now seem seriously compromised as the DGA is regarded as one of the most reliable predictors of Oscar success. Only six times in 63 years has the winner of the DGA award failed to go on to win the Oscar for best director.
The DGA awards will be announced on January 28.
