Los Angeles - Bawdy chick-flick Bridesmaids was among the nominees named Thursday by the Writers Guild of America, boosting its once unthinkable tilt for Oscar glory.
Other nominees in the WGA's original screenplay category included cancer comedy 50/50, Woody Allen's whimsical romance Midnight in Paris, Young Adult by Juno writer Diablo Cody and Win Win - a family dramedy from Tom McCarthy.
In the adapted screenplay section, the nominees included George Clooney's family drama The Descendants, Brad Pitt's Moneyball, civil rights drama The Help, Martin Scorsese's Hugo, and The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.
The Documentary Screenplay nominees include Pina by Wim Wenders; Better this Works; If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front; Nostalgia for the Light; Position Among the Stars; and Senna.
Several top Oscar contenders such as The Artist, Drive and Shame are not eligible under WGA rules. Among the Oscar hopefuls snubbed by the writers guild were Steven Spielberg's War Horse and the 9/11 drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
