British actor Benedict Cumberbatch will play the villain in Paramount's upcoming untitled "Star Trek" sequel.
According to Variety, J.J. Abrams is directing from a script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof.
Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, and David Ellison are producing through Bad Robot and Skydance Productions.
Shooting is set to begin later this month with a May 17, 2013 release date set.
No plot details have been released yet.
The majority of the cast from the 2009 reboot, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and John Cho, are returning.
Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Noel Clarke have joined the cast in unspecified roles.
After negotiations broke down with Benicio del Toro to play the villain, Édgar Ramírez had auditioned for the role last month.
Cumberbatch is hot off his roles in "War Horse" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy."
He is best known for his role as Sherlock Holmes on the BBC series "Sherlock."
