First entry in popular teen series - THE HUNGER GAMES - from author Suzanne Collin's is bought to the big screen. When is it released? - March 23rd (US and UK) Who does it star? - Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Alexander Ludwig, Donald Sutherland, Willow Shields, Isabelle Fuhrman, Toby Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley and Leven Rambin. Previous film/related or similar film's box office? - Two recent releases based on young adult sci-fi/fantasy include 2011's "I Am Number Four" and of course the hugely successful "Twilight Saga." The latest "Twilight" movie, "Breaking Dawn: Part 1" has won over $660 million from viewers, whilst "I Am Number Four" bought in $144 million. "The Hunger Games" trilogy is increasingly popular property, so I fully expect the first entry in the movie series to have a strong final box office receipt. What is it about? - In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Find out more about this movie in our database here. Previous film/related or similar film's box office? - The original 1990 Total Recall movie grossed $261 million worldwide, very good for an R rated movie at the time. It was 1990's fifth highest grossing film. What is it about? - Director Len Wiseman (Underworld, Die Hard 4.0) jumps into the remake game with this retooling of Philip K. Dick's short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, originally brought to the big screen by Paul Verhoeven in the 1990 sci-fi action eye-popper starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Colin Farrell stars as a blue-collar worker whose grip on his own identity breaks down after realizing he might be a spy. Equilibrium's Kurt Wimmer provides the screenplay, with Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston heading up the rest of the cast as the villainous Cohaagen.
