'New Year's Eve' takes win over soft weekend

Warner Bros.' "New Year's Eve" won the domestic box office with $13.7 million over the worst weekend at the domestic box office in three years.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the overall revenue for the weekend was an estimated $78 million.
This was the lowest since early September 2008, when revenues tallied $68 million over the September 5-7 weekend.
20th Century Fox's "The Sitter" opened in the No. 2 spot with $10 million.
Summit's " The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn--Part 1" placed No. 3 with $7.9 million for a domestic cumulative of $259.6 million.
Disney's "The Muppets" came in at No. 4 with $7.1 million for a domestic cumulative of $65.8 million.
Sony's "Arthur Christmas" finished in the No. 5 spot with $6.6 million for a domestic cumulative of $33.5 million.
