Eddie Redmayne has joined the cast of Universal's film version of the legendary musical "Les Miserables."
According to Variety, Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech") is directing with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway starring.
A December 7, 2012 release date has been set.
The musical's original producer, Cameron Mackintosh, will produce along with Working Title Films' Tim Bevan, Debra Hayward and Eric Fellner.
William Nicholson wrote the script from Victor Hugo's classic novel.
Set against the backdrop of a historically fictional 19th century French rebellion, the story centers on Jean Valjean (Jackman), an ex-convict who is pursued by the relentless Inspector Javert (Crowe).
There have been several film and TV adaptations of "Les Miserables" with the last bigscreen version being the 1998 film that starred Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman.
Redmayne is generating buzz for his role opposite Michelle Williams in "My Week With Marilyn."
