Gerard Butler is in talks to star in Relativity Media's political thriller "Hunter Killer."
According to Variety, Antoine Fuqua is set to direct.
Phillip Noyce had been previously attached to direct.
The film is an adaptation of George Wallace and Don Keith's novel "Firing Point."
John Kolvenbach and Arne Schmidt wrote the first draft of the script with Jamie Moss doing a rewrite.
The film follows an untested submarine captain (Butler) who joins forces with a Navy SEAL team to save the Russian president and stop a crazed Russian general from starting World War III.
Sam Worthington ("Avatar") is being considered for the leader of the Navy SEAL team.
Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing with Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe of Original Film.
Shooting is expected to begin this winter with a December 21, 2012, release date set.
Butler is getting good notices for his current performance in "Machine Gun Preacher."
