Legendary German film director Werner Herzog will play the villain opposite Tom Cruise in Paramount Pictures' "One Shot."
According to Variety, Christopher McQuarrie is directing from his own script.
A February 8, 2013 release date has been set.
Shooting will begin later this fall.
Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins and Robert Duvall have also been cast.
The film is based on the 2005 Lee Child novel of the same name that centers on Jack Reacher (Cruise), an ex-Army police officer who becomes involved in a case where a sniper is accused of murdering five people in a shooting.
Cruise is producing with his partner Paula Wagner through their Cruise/Wagner Productions along with David Ellison's Skydance Productions; Dana Goldberg and Gary Levinsohn through Mutual Film Company; and Don Granger.
Herzog has been working on documentaries lately, with his latest "Into the Abyss," having premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
His most recent feature films include "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done" and "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans" both released in 2009.
His most iconic films include "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" in 1972 and "Fitzcarraldo" in 1982.
