Paramount is moving forward on a remake of the 1974 James Caan gambling drama "The Gambler," with Martin Scorsese directing.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Irwin Winkler, who produced the original, will produce the remake.
William Monahan, who won an Oscar for the screenplay of Scorsese's "The Departed," will write the screenplay.
Leonardo DiCaprio's name has been mentioned as a possible star but no deal is set for the actor.
The 1974 original was directed by Karel Reisz and starred Caan, Lauren Hutton and Paul Sorvino.
James Toback wrote the screenplay, based on the short novel "The Gambler" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
The film centers on Axel Freed (Caan), a New York City English professor whose gambling addiction is putting his life in danger.
Down $44,000 in gambling debts, Freed extorts money from his mother and even corrupts one of his own students into shaving points on a basketball game.
Scorsese's upcoming family film "Hugo" opens this Thanksgiving.
