John Cusack has joined the cast of the adaptation of Pete Dexter's 1995 novel "The Paperboy."
According to Variety, Lee Daniels ("Precious") is directing.
Zac Efron has been cast with Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey in advanced talks to board the film.
Cusack is replacing Tobey Maguire, who had to drop out of the film because of a conflict with his shooting Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby."
The film, set in Florida, centers on two brothers, one a reporter and the other a university dropout, who dig into the mystery surrounding a death row inmate convicted of murdering a local sheriff.
Daniels is producing with Hilary Shor.
Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Danny Dimbort and Cassian Elwes are executive producing.
Cusack will be seen as Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue's "The Raven" next March.
