Russell Crowe has joined the cast of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' Superman reboot "Man of Steel", opposite Henry Cavill as Superman.
According to Variety, Crowe will play Jor-El, Superman's biological father.
Marlon Brando played Jor-El in 1978's "Superman."
Sean Penn and Clive Owen had been considered for the role.
The cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent, and Antje Traue as Faora.
Zack Snyder ("300," "Watchmen," "Sucker Punch") is directing with shooting set to begin this summer in Chicago.
The film is set for a December 2012 release before Warners could potentially lose the copyright on the character in 2013.
Christopher Nolan will produce with wife Emma Thomas, as well as Charles Roven ("The Dark Knight") and Deborah Snyder ("Watchmen," "Sucker Punch").
David S. Goyer ("Batman Begins") wrote the script, based on a story he conceived with Nolan.
Plot details are being kept under wraps.
Crowe was last seen in "The Next Three Days."
