Sony Pictures has offered director Paul Greengrass their untitled big screen adaptation of the real-life story of Capt. Richard Phillips, whose ship was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.
According to Variety, Billy Ray will write the script with Scott Rudin, Michael DeLuca, Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti producing.
Tom Hanks is attached to play Phillips, whose Maersk Alabama was captured by Somali pirates in spring 2009. Phillips, in order to save his crew, offered himself as a hostage to the pirates. He was eventually rescued by the U.S. Navy. The story created a media sensation and Sony purchased the rights soon after.
Sony is looking to begin production later this fall after Hanks finishes shooting the Wachowski brothers and Tom Tykwer's adaptation of David Mitchell's novel "Cloud Atlas."
Greengrass' credits include "The Bourne Supremacy," "United 93," "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Green Zone."
