Universal has officially offered "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth the male lead in "Snow White and the Huntsman."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman and Joel Edgerton had been attached to the role of the huntsman at various points.
In the retelling of the classic Grimm fairy tale, the huntsman (who originally is supposed to kill Snow White but ends up letting her go) becomes her protector as they try to escape from the evil queen who wants Snow White dead.
Kristen Stewart is set to play Snow White while Charlize Theron will play the evil queen. Sam Claflin ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides") is in talks to play the prince and love interest of Snow White.
Rupert Sanders is directing from an Evan Daugherty script, with Joe Roth and Palak Patel producing.
The film is being fast-tracked to shoot this summer for a Dec. 21, 2012, release.
Another Snow White film, set up at Relativity with Tarsem Singh directing Julia Roberts as the evil queen and Lily Collins as Snow White, is also being fast-tracked as well.
