Arnold Schwarzenegger has decided to go with the drama "Cry Macho" as his first starring role since wrapping his seven-year run as governor of California.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, legendary Oscar-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy ("The Godfather," "Million Dollar Baby") will produce with Brad Furman ("The Lincoln Lawyer") directing.
Shooting is expected to begin in September.
Based on the 1975 novel by N. Richard Nash, the film focuses on a down-and-out horse trainer (Schwarzenegger) who is offered $400,000 to kidnap his former employer's troublemaking 9-year-old son from his ex-wife in Mexico. With the authorities on their trail, the two begin to develop a father-son bond.
Nash, who passed away in 2000, wrote the screenplay.
Ruddy has been trying to get the film made for several years with Burt Lancaster, Pierce Brosnan and Clint Eastwood having all been attached to the project at various times.
Schwarzenegger last starred in 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." He had a cameo in Lionsgate's "The Expendables" last year as well as 2004's "Around the World in 80 Days."
