Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin are in official negotiations to star in Warner Bros.' 1940s cop movie "Gangster Squad."
According to Variety, Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland") will direct.
"Gangster Squad" is based on a seven-part Los Angeles Times article written by Paul Lieberman that details how, during 1940s corruption and chaos, the LAPD created a special unit called the Gangster Squad to prevent the East Coast mafia from infecting the city.
Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick are producing.
Former LAPD officer Will Beall wrote the screenplay.
Penn will be seen in Terrence Malick's upcoming "The Tree of Life."
Gosling stars opposite Steve Carell in the upcoming romantic comedy "Crazy Stupid Love."
Brolin is shooting "Men in Black III."
